It is typically performed in the office of a doctor. The surgeon first cleans your scalp before injecting medicine to numb the area behind your head. The doctor will select one of two options for the transplantation: follicular units strip surgery (FUSS) or the follicular unit extraction (FUE).

By using FUSS, the surgeon takes a 6- to 10-inch skin strip from the side of your scalp. They then set the strip aside and stitch the scalp shut. This is quickly covered by the hair that surrounds it.
